This week one of the trendiest new Buenos Aires club parties, Zizek Urban Beats Club, is moving from the relatively unknowen X Vos to Niceto Club, which is by any measure one of Buenos Aires's hottest locations. What sets the party apart is not only its hotness, but also the music that tends to dominate it—a genre called cumbia that's been mashed-up and mixed with drum-and-bass, electronica and the like. In the past thought of in Argentina as country/ghetto music—originally a kind of Colombian folk music with African roots—cumbia's now moved into the club mainstream. Zizek Urban Beats Club—curiously named for a Slovenian philosopher—is co-produced by friend Grant Dull at Whats Up Buenos Aires and will be featuring DJs such as Gaby Kerpel, who penned the music of De La Guarda. The Wednesday parties start at what counts as early in Buenos Aires, midnight, and cost 10 pesos (about $3.50) to get in.
