Pizza 10 Ways in Chicago

Thursday, April 26, 2007

pizza%2010%20ways%20in%20chicago.jpgThough the predominant pizza aesthetic in Chicago is the traditional deep dish, the city's general pizza fixation is both broad and deep. There are likely innumerable ways to eat pizza in this town, but just for the sake of celebrating diversity, we've discovered nine other ways of classifying a Windy City pie. Deep dish, stuffed, kosher, illegal, and -- God forbid -- New York style, all after the jump.

Classic Deep Dish @ Pizano's

864 N State St
Chicago, IL 60610
(312) 751-1766

One of Chicago's favorites for deep-dish pizza and consistently wins awards from newspapers and food blogs. Their crust, the recipe for which is a closely guarded secret, is flaky and buttery, while their sauce is extra thick. The best-seller here is the Rudy's Special, a pizza topped with copious amounts of cheese, Italian sausage, green onions, and mushrooms. [link]

Lou Malnati's Pizzeria

439 N Wells St
Chicago, IL 60610
(312) 828-9800

For those out-of-state or who want to heat up their pie at home, legendary Malnatis Pizza have their pizza available in frozen form. It has a cultish mail-order following, and many regulars will take a frozen pie every when they don't feel like leaving the house for excellent deep dish. [link]

Greek Style @ Marie's Liquor & Pizza

4129 W Lawrence Ave
Chicago, IL 60630
(773) 725-1853

Greek-style pizza is extremely crispy with a flat crust and an excessive amount of tomato sauce. In Chicago, the best place to go for this is Marie's Pizza and Liquors, run and patronized by Greeks. They cut their pizza up into teeny delicious squares. [link]

Hometown Chain: Uno Chicago Grill

29 E Ohio St
Chicago, IL 60611
(312) 321-1000

The famous chain got its start in Chicago and was the first deep-dish place in the city. It was founded in 1943 by former football star Ike Sewell and expanded to a second location (Pizzeria Due) 12 years later. Though the chain is a giant nationally, only four locations exist in Chicagoland. [link]

Kosher @ Tel-Aviv Kosher Pizza

6349 N California Ave
Chicago, IL 60659
(773) 764-3776

The small neighborhood place serves dairy-only pizzas with a variety of toppings in addition to a full menu of salads, sandwiches, and hot entrees. Most are New York style, but they also serve deep dish. The regular menu is a fusion of different cuisines, including Israeli and Latin influences. [link]

2548 N Clark St
Chicago, IL 60614
(773) 404-0200

Known as one of the few places in Chicago serving excellent New York style pizza, Café Luigi's pies are mostly thin with wide and foldable slices. They also serve deep dish and stuffed crust, but people really come here for the thin stuff. [link]

Strangest Theme @ Fox's Oak Lawn Restaurant & Pizza

9956 S Western Ave
Chicago, IL 60643
(773) 239-3212

We've posted about this place before because we think it's so funny. First, they serve thin-crust pizza in Chicago, which isn't exactly common. Secondly, they are not Italian themed; rather, the bar is covered in Irish flags, photos, and memorabilia. They even have inflatable leprechauns at the door. Lastly, when our correspondent went, the restaurant hosted a band of Scottish bag pipe players in kilts. [link]

Stuffed @ Nancy's Pizza

3970 N Elston Ave
Chicago, IL 60618
(773) 267-8182

Nancy's Pizza invented the Chicago staple of stuffed pizza. The owners created the pizza from a recipe for scarciedda, a special Easter pie. The crust is super deep, and the cheese is cooked under the tomato sauce [link]

Thin Crust @ Spacca Napoli

1769 W Sunnyside Ave
Chicago, IL 60640
(773) 878-2420

Eating thin-crust pizza is not the Chicago taboo it once was, and more and more thin-crust joints are popping up in the Windy City. In fact, there's now even a classification of pizza called "Chicago thin crust," which means the flat pizza is cut into small squares (a la Greek style). The pizzas at Spacca Napoliare are crunchy, light as air, and topped with super-fresh ingredients. [link]

Topped with Illegal Foie Gras @ Connie's Pizza

2373 S Archer Ave
Chicago, IL 60616
(312) 326-3443

Though this could have since been discontinued, it was reported that right as the foie gras ban went into place in Chicago, Connie's started serving foie gras pizza. Don't expect it to be a permanent menu item, but go now to see if you can still get it. Ask for it casually, and maybe pass a twenty over the counter, just to heighten the excitement. [link]

Upside Down @Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder

2121 N Clark St
Chicago, IL 60614
(773) 248-2570

One of the most original pizza joints in Chicago, Chicago Pizza and Over Grinder serves pizza upside down in a bowl with hollowed-out bread -- the "pizza pot pie." The wait is usually in the one-hour range, and the proprietor doesn't take names. He simply says, "I'll remember your face," and he manages to do it every time. [link]
