A Sports Bar? In Downtown LA? For Real?

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

grandbar_sm.jpgWell, no. Not totally for real. But very close. But we're talking about a downtown LA bar open past sundown, so the Grand Ave Sports Bar gets a pass. It's physically attached to the stuffy Biltmore Hotel, but the similarities pretty much end there. The bar already has most of what a good sports bar needs: a ring of plasma TVs, some gestures toward a decent happy hour, and edible fried food. Their problem is that they lack something in the way of a critical mass of sports fans. Or anything fans. Or people. It's almost surreal: dozens of TVs, almost no people. That makes it perfect if you're looking to watch a game with a couple friends in a bar, with bar food and bar drinks. It's significantly less perfect if you're looking to get rowdy. Then again, have we mentioned how it's sports bar in downtown? Baby steps.
