Adopt a Dog or a Cat in LA

Friday, January 4, 2008

la-adopt-a-dog-main.jpgApproximately 500 dogs are euthanized in LA every day. Around 25% of those are purebreds. That means that of the approximately 200,000 dogs killed in LA shelters annually, almost 50,000 are what you'd get at that horrid Beverly Center shop. So step away from the pet store, people. Lose the business card of that breeder, and join me on a tour of some of LA's no-kill animal shelters and rescue organizations, where staff and volunteers work tirelessly to save the lives of thousands of dogs and cats each year. They've got furry friends of all ages and breeds, and they won't let them go without making sure they're spayed, neutered, and up to date on all their vaccines.

Noah's Bark @ PETCO

24413 Crenshaw Blvd
Torrance, CA 90505

This South Bay rescue organization was founded by Lila Hemenway in 1997. Because they don't have a physical shelter, all of their animals are housed by foster parents, which they always need more of. Pets come to Noah's Bark as strays, owner turn-ins, and from LA area shelters. There are always dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds available for adoption, and their pet adoption fairs are held every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at PETCO in Torrance. [link]

Much Love @ Tails Pet Boutique

2912 Main St
Santa Monica, CA 90405

Run entirely by volunteers dedicated to raising funds, fostering, and caring for the animals, not to mention participating in weekend mobile adoptions, Much Love also gets a lot of support and publicity from celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, whose life was saved by a pooch she rescued a few years back. On Saturdays, they hold pet fairs in the courtyard of Tails Pet Boutique in Santa Monica. They also host pet fairs on Sundays in the parking lot of Lost Planet Production Co. (2515 Main Street in Santa Monica, a half block north of Ocean Park Boulevard). [link]
