LA's Best Donut Shops

Friday, June 6, 2008

Everyday on Gridskipper we give you a new map. Some are new, some are fetched from our archive, newly updated. Happy Gridskipping.

ladonuts.jpgIt’s National Donut Day everybody! So, why not celebrate with a nice jelly-filled/pink-frosting topped/sprinkle-covered one? As fancy as Los Angeles wishes it were, at heart it's trashy frontier town with simple, simple tastes. Hence the proliferation of donut shops -- purveyors of delicious, high-calorie nothingness -- across the city. There's a pretty even mixture of locals, inexpensive chains, colorful independents, and donut "boutiques." Here's our list of favorites from Silver Lake to Beverly Hills.

1

Tang's Donut

4341 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90029
(323) 662-4085

]

Perhaps the mood occasionally strikes at 3 a.m. for a maple bar and a riveting round of chess. You can get all that and more at Tang's, which has a highly dubious location and an underground rep for the best croissant sandwiches in town. It's open 24 hours for your drunken pleasure. [link]

2

Randy's Donuts

805 W Manchester Blvd
Inglewood, CA 90301
(310) 645-4707

The huge donut marquee is a beacon to residents of South LA and people flying into LAX. Randy's is king of the classic donuts, like buttermilk and jelly-filled, and they also do a brisk business in cheese donuts (like Danishes, but worse for you!). [link]

Yum Yum Donuts

724 N Highland Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90038
(323) 462-9067

]

OK, so this is a chain. But at my first job in LA, someone brought in a Yum Yum box every Friday. And at my first job in LA, I gained 15 pounds! Could there be a more ringing endorsement? [link]

Bob's Coffee & Donuts

6333 W 3rd St
Los Angeles, CA 90036
(323) 933-8929

]

The world-famous Farmer's Market has a stand where all that goodness is fried up right before your eyes. Try the cinnamon roll, or for funsies, a dinosaur-shaped donut. [link]

5

Stan's Donuts

10948 Weyburn Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90024
(310) 208-8660

]

You'll have to fight off the throngs of UCLA students at this Westwood classic. I have a special place in my heart for this place, which advertises "a multitude of scrumptious varieties." It's a baroque, apt description. [link]

6

Frittelli Doughnuts & Coffee

350 N Canon Dr
Beverly Hills, CA 90210
(310) 276-1408

The Beverly Hills fancy-donut emporium suggests pairings of their offerings and has seasonal offerings such as Key lime donuts and green apple fritters. They also pretend to have healthy offerings, with a selection of honey wheat donuts. But the chocolate-filled chocolate creme donuts is tastier. [link]
