Los Angeles is World's Zeitgeistiest City

Monday, January 8, 2007

losangeles.jpgAccording to Hub Culture, Los Angeles most perfectly captures the world's zeitgeist. This bodes poorly. If this is indeed true, to paraphrase Dickens, these times are crap. The website asserts LA"s of the momentness: "American Apparel is changing fashion with vertically integrated manufacturing....Myspace culture is taken for granted, everywhere...Entourage and other shows, from the OC to Laguna Beach, have moved the collective consciousness west...LA [is[ the city of the moment: the energy is positive, its power is on the rise, and people everywhere have LA on their mind." True though these claims may be (except of course, AA just sold to a multi-national conglomerate, MySpace has little real-world geographical moorings, and the OC does not focus any sort of worthwhile consciousness anywhere) if LA is what we're all about, I guess we're just old-fashioned or, as the Rolling Stones sang, out of time. New York, by the way, slips in at nine, right above Geneva and below Berlin, Mumbai, Istanbul, London, Buenos Aires, Beijing and Dubai. Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo? Woo-hoo?!?
