Ultimate iPhone Campout Guide: Beverly Center Los Angeles

Monday, June 25, 2007

beverly-apple-store.jpgWhen deciding where you should do your iPhone campout, it would be quite the folly to discount the Beverly Center. First, all of the yuppies and the hipsters will be camping out at the Grove, meaning your odds of getting the phone are much better. Second, your main competition is likely to be a bunch of agency assistants who can be dispatched by writing "oxycontin" on a bottle and throwing it in the street. Third, Cedars Sinai Medical Center is next door, so you won't have to feel guilty trampling anybody as you make haste for the Jesus Phone.

Apple's iPhone will be released June 29 in the United States. And you want to be ready. In partnership with Gizmodo, each Ultimate iPhone Campout Guide maps a choice Apple Store plus nearby cheap hotels, good eats, cool drinks, free bathrooms, accessible wifi, and other local delights. If you have your own ideas, share them via email or in the comments below.

Coronet Pub

370 N La Cienega Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 659-4583

Depending on the success of your iPhone camping trip, you will want to either drink to your good fortune or drown your sorrows, preferably without making a big production of it all. We offer you the Coronet Pub. The bartenders probably make the shittiest pomegranate martini in town, but that's what we love about this place. If you go, make sure to sample the house special, "17 Days in a Crack House." [link]

Free Wifi: King's Road Cafe

Los Angeles, CA 90048

Since the Beverly Center doesn't open until 10 a.m., you'll still have plenty of time for breakfast -- and the best in the area is at the King's Road cafe. As a bonus, it also offers free wifi for those of you who prefer to get your wireless sans wardriving. [link]

Absolutely Pho-bulous

350 N La Cienega Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 360-3930

I mention Absolutely Pho-Bulous in part because it has such a great name; a restaurant pun that horrific takes effort. Inside you'll find a good selection of inexpensive Vietnamese dishes. The pho itself is not as good as you'll find in Koreatown, but you'll probably feel safer, even without tendon or tripe on the menu. [link]

North End Pizzeria

8600 W 3rd St
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 550-8956

Although there are lots of good places to find a burger in Los Angeles, it's much more difficult to find good pizza. North End Pizzeria offers a great New York style thin crust pizza, and one of the rarities of Los Angeles -- an actual calzone! And if you're lazy, yes, they deliver. [link]

Sushi Mac

8474 W 3rd St
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(323) 653-3959

The obvious choice for any Apple fan is Sushi Mac. The main attraction of this place is that it's cheap: $2.75 gets you anything on the surprisingly varied menu. The sushi itself is middle of the road, but the food comes fast so you won't have to leave your camping spot for very long. [link]

Free Bathroom: Longs Drugs

8490 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(323) 653-4616

Long's Drugs is just across the street from the Beverly Center and is open 24 hours. This makes for a very convenient restroom, although try not to go dressed like Steve Jobs at a keynote; they are likely to think you're homeless and try and shoo you away. [link]

Free Bathroom: Sofitel Los Angeles

8555 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 278-5444

Just north of the Beverly Center, the Sofitel hotel is really hard to miss and offers the cleanest public bathrooms in the area. If you're looking for a trendy little bit of nightlife, the Stone Rose lounge next to the hotel is a decent option. [link]

Free Bathroom: Beverly Center Bathroom

8500 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 854-0070

Once you get inside the Beverly Center, the closest bathrooms are on Level 7 and Level 8. Just make sure to get there early, because the EPA is threatening to close them down in the near future. [link]

Elan Hotel Modern

Apple Store Beverly Center

8522 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 289-7014

You'll be lining up outside the Apple Store on the Sixth Leve, right next to the Ferrari Store. In general, parking in the Beverly Center is kind of haphazard at best, but there are escalators and an elevator nearby. [link]
