An Indie Rocker's Guide to Brooklyn

Monday, November 26, 2007

Matt%20Berninger%20-%20An%20Indie%20Rocker%27s%20Tour%20of%20Brooklyn.jpgThe National's critically acclaimed 2007 album, Boxer, has elevated the Brooklyn-based quintet to a verifiable indie-rock phenom. But when not busy touring the world, playing with The Arcade Fire or selling out five nights in a row at the Bowery Ballroom, lead singer Matt Berninger is happy staying close to home indulging in all his borough has to offer. Maintaining a brooding, guttural tone like Matt's requires both physical and mental sustenance in the form of food, booze, and movies -- and thankfully the Prospect Heights denizen was kind enough to take time out of his tour schedule to share with us his favorite Brooklyn locales.

1

BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music)

30 Lafayette Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11217

"My favorite place to see movies. Nice seats, good views, no jackasses." [link]

Brooklyn Social

335 Smith St
Brooklyn, NY 11231

This former Italian men's club has a "classy old Brooklyn vibe." Plus, "Tasty Metropolitans if you like pink drinks in fragile glasses." [link]

Boat

175 Smith St
Brooklyn, NY 11201

This unmarked Smith Street dive with a killer jukebox is Mr. Berninger's favorite bar outside Prospect Heights. And for those in the market, it's also a "Good place to find a wife." [link]

The Farm on Adderley

1108 Cortelyou Rd
Brooklyn, NY 11218

This Ditmas Park foodie mecca is known for their seasonal, locally grown ingredients and friendly, neighborhood charm. "The food is amazing and they sometimes play songs off our Cherry Tree EP, which was written to eat to," says Matt. [link]

Beast

638 Bergen St
Brooklyn, NY 11238

This inventive tapas restaurant offers "Great food with a curious décor," which, thanks to iron chandeliers and "sapphic gargoyles and such," exudes medieval goth. [link]

The Usual

637 Vanderbilt Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11238

Matt deems the fare at this Prospect Heights eatery better than your normal diner food. He also appreciates its remedial qualities -- "Great for hangovers" -- and says the owners are uncommonly nice. [link]

Le Gamin Cafe

556 Vanderbilt Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11238

Matt enjoys the comforts of this quaint and casual French bistro. While Le Gamin also serves Frenchie standards like amande croissants, croque monsieurs, and moule frites, the savory and sweet crepes are the way to go. [link]

Soda Bar

629 Vanderbilt Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11238

Swivel-top bar stools and vintage signage recall this neighborhood bar's former life as a mom-and-pop soda fountain. But in its current incarnation, "Soda has lots of couches and corners to disappear into, a great jukebox and a spacious garden for smokers. They also serve decent perogies, burgers, and chicken wings." [link]

Amorina

624 Vanderbilt Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11238

"This is across the street and run by the same people from Aliseo Osteria del Borgo, but it's more casual. They serve amazing pizzas, and you will find spaghetti and meatballs." Keep it simple with Amorina's traditional pie toppings, like tomato and fresh mozz, or venture into esotery with figs, dried cherries, orange zest, and crème fraiche. (photo) [link]

Aliseo Osteria del Borgo

665 Vanderbilt Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11238

This Prospect Heights osteria specializes in quality Italian small plates and wine from owner Albano Ballerini's native Marche region. Matt recommends the regional authenticity ("You won't find spaghetti and meatballs") and reveals his softer side ("The perfect place to take a sweetheart"). [link]
