Cobble Hill Boutiques

indie%20clothes%20in%20cobble%20hill%20new%20york.jpgShopping in Brooklyn can be a little overwhelming if you don't know your way around. It's difficult to know where to go when commercial strips are more low-key than in Manhattan, making it hard to recognize a shopping opportunity when you see it. Cobble Hill is a perfect example of a neighborhood that's gained its popularity from quaint charm and sophisticated sensibility, and with great popularity comes great style. Here are a few of my best picks for independent clothing stores in the Hill.

Sir Brooklyn

Sir Brooklyn

A fashion designer's look book come to life. Until recently, they exclusive carried clothing by Joanna Baum and jewelry by Nicole Rowars. They've now expanded their shtick to include handbags and shoes by indie designers. Think frills that are all grown up and have since dropped out of law school. [link]

If big, bold colors suit your aesthetic, then a visit to AliKat may yield big finds. They carry a variety of labels, from ultrasoft, monochromatic Ella Moss and Vince dresses to bright Sportsac bags. The store kind of has a teen vibe, but there are definitely sophisticated items mixed in. [link]

Bird

220 Smith St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Bird

A Park Slope standby since 1999, Bird opened its Cobble Hill outpost last year. Owner Jennifer Mankins is a fashion insider, so expect to find a very trend-conscious selection that still manages to maintain a classic appeal. Labels include Demylee, Clu, and Etoile-Isabel Marant. Their website is also helpful because it offers an "in store" section, so that you can see their full range without having to visit, whether it's available online or not. [link]

Dear FieldBinder

If you want all the cute, bookish styles that are cropping up, but you don't really want to pay $300 for a dress, check out the sales here. The selection is great and prices are relatively reasonable, but when they have a sale, they go all out. If that fact alone doesn't inspire a visit, one look at their window displays will. Labels include Charlotte Ronson, Saja, and Cynthia Rowley. [link]

Lily

209 Court St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Lily

A great place to pick up some basics: comfy tees and warm sweaters line a whole wall of the place. There's also a small selection of well-chosen dresses. The look here is a little arts-and-craftsy, so it's no surprise that Free People is one of the labels they stock heavily. The also have a small selection of casual shoes and handcrafted handbags. Teddy

216 Court St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Teddy

Another great destination if you're loving all the Peter Pan collars and conservative cute that some boutiques are charging an arm and a leg for. The prices are reasonable, the stock is thoughtfully chosen, and their shoes are cute (think Seychelles and stuff like that). [link]
