Downtown Dance Parties

Thursday, October 18, 2007

downtown%20dance%20parties%20new%20york.jpgSure the Meatpacking District teems with oh so popular clubs with doormen, multiple levels, celebrity sightings, and overpriced drinks. But for those of us who love dancing but are allergic to MePa's stench of cologne and doucherie, there are plenty of alternatives. Streams of new dance clubs have opened up downtown over the past few years, and those already in existence now curate parties with better DJs and hipper crowds. Nowadays you can see some of the city's most innovative spinners spinning until 4 a.m. every night of the week at some of the following clubs in Chelsea, the West Village, the LES, and Brooklyn.

Studio B

259 Banker St
Brooklyn, NY 11222

Everyone's favorite new dance club, Greenpoint's Studio B hosts a number of incredibly fun dance nights and live concerts. Friday night's Fun/Fixed party is known as one of the best in town -- or at least in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg area -- as it draws popular DJs and their hordes of fans. [link]

Revolver

210 Rivington St
New York, NY 10002

Located on the far east edge of the Lower East Side, Revolver offers a great spot for dancing and listening to rock 'n' roll off the main thruway of Ludlow and Orchard streets. The DJs may not be as well known, but the drinks are cheaper than anywhere else nearby. The dance parties attract a fun crowd, and the music ranges from rock to disco to electronic. [link]

Rebel

251 W 30th St
New York, NY 10001

With its multilevel space, midtown/Chelsea locale, and its appeal to both swanky Manhattanites and B&T crowds, I'd say this is one of the most unremarkable of the places on this list. That said, the place throws the fabulous Pussy Party every month with multiple DJs and a variety of performers, and it often hosts the preholiday mega party Motherfucker (next one on October 30). Check to see which DJs and/or parties are booked before committing. [link]

NuBlu

62 Avenue C
New York, NY 10009

A little more Euro, a little less hipster -- Nublu the somewhat hidden spot off of Avenue C hosts dance parties every night with musical styles ranging from minimalist techno to bossa to modern Brazilian electronic tunes and live jazz. The Brazilian Girls got their start here and make appearances pretty often, along with a host of good DJs. The space can be tight, especially in winter when the back garden is closed, but NuBlu always gives off an effortlessly cool vibe. [link]

Hiro

363 W 16th St
New York, NY 10011

You can't knock Hiro Ballroom in terms of design and overall beauty. The Maritime Hotel's huge two floor dance club with its paper lanterns, green and gold accents, and vaulted ceilings hands down beats the cramped sweaty downtown venues in terms of style. However, the lines are impossibly long, the cheapest cocktails are $12, and some of the parties are hit or miss. Check to see who's spinning, as on good nights you can hear members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, and the Presets; and on bad nights, Moby and his crew. No matter the music, you'll always see a mix of downtown rockers, celebrities, models, and all manner of hipsters. [link]

Happy Ending

302 Broome St
New York, NY 10002

A former erotic massage parlor transformed into a hip two story club, Happy Ending hosts many a dance party throughout the week and is a major go-to dance spot for downtown partiers. Favorite parties include "Unstoppable Perfect," a crowded dance night featuring dance rock, house, and electro every other Thursday; and "Disco Down," held every Tuesday on the ground level featuring Brit pop, indie rock, and disco. 200 Orchard

200 Orchard St
New York, NY 10002

Formerly Orchard Bar, the renovated 200 Orchard is a bar/venue with DJ booth in the back and a smallish dance floor. Though it's not as popular as 205 and Beatrice Inn, 200 Orchard still holds its own in the downtown dance scene. Check out Wednesday night's High Voltage and Friday night's party hosted by the DJ duo Runaway. Also the record label/PR firm/party throwers Modular host a great monthly party here. [link]
