New York City Sliders

Small%20Hamburgers%20in%20New%20York.jpgEver since White Castle grilled their first miniscule beef patty in 1921, the slider (or "Slyder" in WC parlance) has maintained an integral presence in American burgerology. And while traditionally a Midwestern phenomenon — out-promoted elsewhere by full-sized fast fooders — in recent years, they've caught on back East. Of course, we've already surveyed NYC's full-size burgers once and again. So for a change of stature, put down your quarter pounder and dine on the following list of New York's best bite-sized burgers. Other suggestions may be broiled in the comments or fried in the tipline.

1

Sassy's Sliders

1530 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10028

Sassy's Sliders

New York's premiere microburger vendor is a no frills fast food counter offering the classic slider experience: a tiny, unassuming patty — which may or may not actually taste like meat — topped with browned onions, pickles, and ketchup all smashed between a grease-saturated bun. For those less beef oriented, try the turkey, veggie, chicken parm, and BBQ chicken varieties. [link]

White Castle

781 Metropolitan Ave , Brooklyn, NY 11222

White Castle

Forgo the anatomical paradox that is the "Chicken Ring" and stick with White Castle's specialty, the greasy onion-topped slyder. Then prepare for a serious bout of gastrointestinal distress as these aptly named patties slide right through you. [link]

Burke in the Box

150 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022

Burke in the Box

Buy some Izod shirt and spill grease all over it at David Burke's Bloomingdale's outpost. Burke's slider is made with succulent, flavorful beef topped with cheddar and a pickle slice. The bun is a magnificent cross between a biscuit and an English muffin, and the whole thing is skewered and topped with a cherry tomato. [link]

4

Schnack

122 Union St, Brooklyn, NY 11231

Schnack

Harry Hawk has made a name for himself as one of New York's master grillers. And his kitschy hot dog, beer, and burger shop Schnack has become a defining feature of the so-called "Columbia Waterfront District," which I call Red Hook. Hawk's take on sliders (a.k.a. Schnackies) are flavorful beef patties served on simple buns with Schnack Sauce (a.k.a., mostly Thousand Island). Chose from an extensive fixin' menu or go for the "Warm Kraut," which is free. Little Owl

90 Bedford St., New York, NY 10014

Little Owl

Joey Campanaro's much praised West Village bistro is literally the size of a walk-in closet. But if you're lucky enough to land one of the ten tables, prepare to be amazed by one of the finest feats of meat manipulation in town: gravy meatball sliders made of beef, pork, and veal and topped with pecorino. Staunton Social

99 Stanton St, New York, NY 10002

Staunton Social

Warning: Do not go here stoned, lest you're OK blowing $50 on small hamburgers. This stylish yet homey LES eatery serves three varieties of delicious but dangerously pricy sliders. The Kobe beef and Rhode Island lobster run $6 apiece, and the pulled pork BBQ, $5. (photo) [link]

7

Pop Burger

60 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011

Pop Burger

An open air fast food bar gives way to a late-night lounge at this sleek Meatpacking District slider dealer. Overall, PB's pop-art design falls short of Warhol and feels sterile and contrived, but their patties are flavorful enough thanks to an intense char and a dollop of Russian-ish dressing. [link]

8

Aspen

30 W 22nd St, New York, NY 10010

Aspen

With a lodge-like bar, snow-white walls, and a crackling fire, Aspen's décor nods to the utopian ski community for which it's named. Pretty singles ride up on each other hoping to get laid while dining on a Colorado-inspired menu, including bison sliders with smoked cheddar and bacon. Though Aspen boasts a private "Gonzo" room named after Hunter S. Thompson, there's no doubt he would've feared and loathed the club shirt DJ scene. [link]

9

Cherry Tree

65 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Cherry Tree

A centerpiece of 4th Avenue boozing, Cherry Tree walks the line between Brooklyn hipster and testosterone fueled frat bar. The quieter set relaxes in the courtyard beneath an actual cherry tree, while those at the bar slam 140-oz beers and try to land a spot on the "Drunkard of the Month" chalkboard. CT's menu includes a respectable brick oven pizza and straightforward sliders to sop up all the suds. [link]
