Open-Air Paris Markets for Late Risers

paris%20markets%20for%20late%20risers.JPGGoing to open-air markets in Paris is one of the great pleasures of the city. Rows of gleaming produce, pungent cheeses, freshly baked bread, and glistening fish on ice are but a few of the tantalizing reasons to visit these markets. In my opinion, there's only one major problem with the outdoor food fests: their timing. If, like me, you've arrived one too many times just as the vendors are packing away their goods, or have been greeted by the sight of dwindling piles of mushy fruit and wilted veggies, you'll know what I mean. In the case of these morning markets (which most of them are), the early bird gets the worm-ess produce. If you are tired of getting to the market after all the good stuff is gone, there is hope. In the last few years, the city of Paris has introduced markets that start later in the day. Although they may be smaller and less famous than some of their counterparts, they will still be open when you roll out of bed in the wee hours of the afternoon, or get off from work in the early evening.

Marché Saint-Honoré

Place du Marché Saint-Honoré
75001 1er Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

The center of the place du Marché Saint Honoré is dominated by an elegant glass tower, which contains offices of the French banking giant BNP Paribas, as well as various chic boutiques. In striking contrast to this modern edifice, the colorful and quaint stands of the Marché Saint-Honoré encircle the square every Wednesday from 3p.m. until 8:30 p.m. [link]

Marché Saint Eustache Les Halles

Rue Montmartre
75001 1er Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

In the heart of the historical food market district of Paris, the Marché Saint Eustache les Halles derives its name from two local institutions--the gorgeous 16th-century Église Saint Eustache and the historical (and now defunct) wholesale food market of Les Halles. This cozy market is in operation every Thursday afternoon from 12:30p.m. until 8p.m. and is also open earlier on Sundays, from 7:00a.m. until 3p.m. [link]

Marché Bourse

Place de la Bourse
75002 2ème Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

As might seem appropriate for a market in the shadow of the Palais Brongniart, home to the Paris stock exchange since the early 19th Century, the vendors at the Marché Bourse are looking to make a healthy profit as they ply their wares every Tuesday and Friday from 12:30 pm until 8p.m. If you are not flush with stock dividends, you may want to keep an eye on the bottom line as you browse, although you just may find a bargain. Marché Baudoyer

Place Baudoyer
75004 Paris, Paris, France

Not far from the Hôtel de Ville, the place Baudoyer is filled with lively stalls selling flowers, produce, seafood, and prepared food, among other things, every Wednesday afternoon from 3p.m. until 8:30p.m. Its convenient location near the BHV department store and other businesses along the rue de Rivoli makes this market a good place to finish a shopping trip before heading home for dinner. Marché Anvers

Place d'Anvers
75009 9ème Arrondissement Paris, Paris, France

The Marché Anvers takes place every Friday from 3p.m. to 8 p.m. at the place d'Anvers, just down the hill from Sacré Coeur in Montmartre. From kids in strollers to grannies with rolling carts, you're likely to see a good cross-section of the neighborhood at this competitively priced market. [link]
