Quick & Easy Japanese on rue Sainte Anne

juji-ya%20paris.JPGJapanese food, at least in the Western mind, is often identified with the elaborate preparation and almost ritualized consumption of sushi. However, there's a whole range of food, from fried snacks to bento boxes to hearty noodle soups, that might be considered Japanese "fast food." A particularly good place in Paris to sample this type of cuisine is the rue Sainte Anne, a relatively short street with an unusually high number of Japanese restaurants and businesses. Popular with Japanese tourists and savvy locals, the rue Sainte Anne is conveniently located near the grands magasins of the Opéra district — and it's just a few blocks north of the Louvre, making it a perfect lunch destination after a morning of shopping or sightseeing.

Ace Mart

63, rue Sainte Anne, 75002 Paris France

Ace Mart

This grocery store at the north end of the street sells both Korean and Japanese foods, largely of the instant variety. With one of its walls lined solely with just-add-water noodle soup bowls, and with its large selection of packaged Japanese noodles (ramen, udon, soba), this is the place to stock up on easy-to-prepare pantry items. Or pick up other popular Japanese snack foods, such as Pocky, Calbee chips, and rice crackers, to eat on the run. [link]

Higuma

32 bis, rue Sainte Anne, 75001 Paris France

Higuma

Higuma is a great place for those with large appetites and small budgets. One of their large bowls of ramen (or "lamen" as it appears on the menu here) will set you back only €7 or €8 — throw in a side order of their excellent gyoza (fried dumplings), and you won't need to eat again until tomorrow. The casual diner atmosphere is also a treat; if you're dining solo, sit at the bar and watch your meal being made, or round up a group of friends and stake out a table in their large dining room in the back. Juji-Ya

At Juji-Ya, you can fill your shopping basket and your stomach in the same place. The back part of the store is devoted to frozen, dried, and otherwise preserved Japanese grocery items, and the front part of the store has freshly cooked food (such as fried croquettes, rice balls, and bento boxes) to take away or to eat right there in their dining area. Kioko

46 Rue des Petits Champs, 75002 Paris, France

Kioko

Although not technically on the rue Sainte Anne, Japanese grocery store Kioko is practically around the corner on the rue des Petits Champs. As we once noted, Kioko is a gold mine for those seeking authentic Japanese ingredients for home cooking. For those looking for a quick meal, Kioko offers prepackaged sushi to go, in addition to a range of other tasty snack foods. [link]

Kunitoraya

39 Rue Sainte-Anne, 75001 Paris, France

Kunitoraya

The specialty at this cozy yet elegant restaurant is udon — thick wheat flour noodles normally served with a hot broth, but sometimes served cold with special dipping sauces. Kunitoraya's selection of udon preparations includes Curry-Udon (curry-flavored broth), Tempura-Udon (topped with shrimp fritters), and Kunitora-Udon (topped with slices of pork and served with a miso broth). Sapporo Ramen 2

37 Rue Sainte-Anne, 75001 Paris, France

Sapporo Ramen 2

As its name suggests, Sapporo Ramen 2 (number 1 is located on the rue Saint-Honoré) has a long list of ramen dishes on the menu, but they also offer Japanese curry, stir-fried noodles or rice, and donburi (a type of stew over rice). If you have a larger appetite, Sapporo Ramen's set lunch and dinner menus are reasonably priced between €11 and €13. [link]
