With its glorious beaches, glittering harbor, sunny days, and thumping nightlife, Sydney is a tourist mecca, particularly for young Brits and Scandinavians for whom a year traveling and partying around Australia is a right of passage. All this adds up to a large population of carefree and nubile young things shedding their inhibitions around Sydney before they venture off to gaze at Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef. But where to find yourself a comely Swede with which to share your bed?
Scubar
2-24 Rawson Pl Haymarket, NSW 2000, Australia (02) 9212 4244
Scubar is without a doubt THE backpacker bar. Cheap beer, ping pong tournaments, crab racing, fancy dress theme nights, and close proximity to two of Sydney's biggest hostels means debauchery every night. There's… a heavy influx of college students early in the week as well, so you're guaranteed a healthy mix of nationalities to try your game on. [link]

Coogee Beach Palace Hotel
169 Dolphin St Coogee, NSW 2034, Australia (02) 9664 2900
The Palace is the preferred drinking option for the hordes of backpackers staying at the hostels that clutter the main strip of Coogee. They're often joined en masse by the area's large student population, which… means messy nights of toss the boss and many a pitcher of beer. Try and drag your eyes away from the crowd inside and take in the great view of Coogee Beach every once in a while. [link]

Side Bar
509 Pitt St. at George Street Sydney NSW
Is there a more obvious place to find backpackers drinking than a hostel bar? Side sits in the basement of the huge Wake Up! Hostel. It's got pool tables, the usual drinking competitions and theme nights, and the… added bonus that you should only have to stumble upstairs once you've achieved your goal. Those who shudder at the thought of getting jiggy in a room with eight sleeping strangers probably aren't cut out for backpacker shagging anyway. [link]

Three Wise Monkeys
555 George St Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia (02) 9283 5855
The Monkeys is a city pub that for some reason is incredibly popular with backpackers and Study Abroad students who, whilst they may not be true backpackers, are close enough given that they are young, talk with… an accent, and are not locals. Head to the top floor for the party action, though keep in mind that as always the best nights to snag the backpacker set are early in the week. Cause lets face it: If you weren't planning on working for another six months, you'd be drinking yourself into a stupor on a Tuesday as well. [link]

World Bar
24 Bayswater Rd Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia (02) 9357 7700
The main stay of backpackers in Kings Cross has to be World Bar. There's an eclectic mix of music (so long as it's a genre of dance) and a broad mix of accents to be heard, though they do skew heavily towards British.… Cheap shots are the name of the game during the week, whilst $10 cover charges and huge queues rule the weekend. The Empire Hotel
2A Roslyn St Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia (02) 9360 7531
It's open 24 hours and there are approximately 1.7 billion bunk beds within 2 blocks of it. You do the math. During the week, head to the second level for frivolity; if it's getting towards the wee hours on a weekend,… the very top floor will stay open till well past your bedtime. [link]

Bondi Hotel
178 Campbell Pde Bondi, NSW 2026, Australia (02) 9130 3271
Bondi is infested with backpackers — they're like a plague of biblical proportions during the height of summer. As a result, pretty much any location in Bondi that serves booze can be considered a good backpacker… pickup spot. However if it's getting to the trashy end of the night and everything around seems to be shut, don't despair. That stalwart of messiness that is the venerable Bondi Hotel is still open, and if there's an available foreigner out drinking and hankering for some loving, they'll be here. [link]
