Weekend Breakfasts in Potts Point

Breakfasts%20Potts%20Point%20Sydney.jpgThere are a stack of breakfast options hidden throughout Sydney's Potts Point, with something for every taste and budget. The most visible cafés line the wide Victoria Street that runs almost parallel to the Kings Cross strip, and weekend breakfasts are their bread and butter, so to speak. There are also some great breakfast haunts in the slightly more upmarket streets off this small suburb's main thoroughfare of Macleay Street. The vibe at these niche cafés is pumping on weekends when breakfast is usually served all day, but watch out for the surcharge that's lopped onto the end of the bill at most of these outlets on weekends and public holidays. It's usually 10% but can creep up to 15% with little upfront warning. Here are some of the more interesting options.

1

Joe's Deluxe Café

190 Victoria St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

This fairly small, unassuming cafe is known for its cheap menu and quick bites. It's got a good range of brekky egg variations and lots of Turkish toast which never fails to hit the spot. The friendly waiters are in no hurry, which means you won't have to be either and can sit back on the sidewalk seats with the paper and watch last night's riffraff stumbling past, trying to remember who they are and how they go there. Yellow

57 Macleay St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

The bacon and egg prices here are a little hefty considering the vibe is not as great as the cafés in nearby Challis Street, so it's probably better value for lunch or dinner. It still has cute outdoor seating, and it's hard to fault the food. But by the time a 15% surcharge is added as well, you might not be able to afford lunch out for a while. [link]

La Buvette

Challis Ave
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

One of three quaint cafés in a row on the eastern side of pretty tree-lined Challis Avenue, this very small café is favored by locals; it can be hard to get a seat if you just happen to wander by on a weekend. The seating is mostly on the sidewalk, and because of its popularity and that of its neighboring food haunts, you'll feel a part of a vibrant and buzzing café scene. [link]

Fratelli Paradiso

12 Challis Ave
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

The menu's sprawled in big black writing across the walls, so the regulars who have deciphered it earlier have the upper hand when ordering -- although the choices are prone to change. The setting, spanning what seems like two shop-fronts, gives the impression of two different cafés, but it's nonetheless appealing and conducive to sitting and watching the pretty people of Potts go about their weekend business. Spring

65 Macleay St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

Smack bang between two other cafés which risk stealing its individual identity, this is one to seek out for exceptional coffee and good muffins. The bacon and eggs are huge, but so are the plates, which makes it difficult when you're surrounded by hungry breakfasters tucking in on all sides. You might have to wait for a seat, but it's worth it. [link]

Zinc

77 Macleay St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

If you're into celebrity spotting of a morning, this is the place for you. It's a little more upmarket than some of its local counterparts, with a relatively large and delicious menu which draws the A-list (or D-list, but a celeb's a celeb before noon). It's got plenty of outdoor seating and is undercover, so even works in bad weather. If you're prone to rising after noon or later on a weekend, beware the 3 p.m. curfew for the breakfast menu. Roy's Famous

176 Victoria St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

This is the ideal kind of seating: terraced at the front, overlooking the street, with booths and lots of nooks and crannies at the back. Perfect for hiding away out of the glare of both the sun and the un-hungover to eat your sloppy eggs and bacon the morning after a big night. If you have your sunglasses to hide behind though, there's also seating on the sidewalk. [link]

Dov @ Delectica

130 Victoria St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

The trendy Dov cafe in Darlinghurst closed a year or so ago, then found a new home on the former premises of Delectica café, which had also met its end on the corner of Orwell Street at Potts Point. Now it's a force to be reckoned with -- always popular, but without pretension. They do a mean croque monsieur and croque madame, those glorious and utterly over the top three storey toast, cheese, and ham (egg in the case of the madame) concoctions. Delish. [link]

Nest

145 Victoria St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia

Such a cute, nurturing name, which lives up to its reputation. Although the setting isn't entirely quaint, located beneath an apartment block, it's peaceful enough and outdoorsy, so great for warm mornings. The caramelized poached pears are a delight, as are the other warming menu options which move slightly away from traditional bacon and eggs. The coffee and sweets selection are worth coming for if you're not up for a traditional brekky feast. [link]
