Pet Sounds: DC Dog & Cat Shops

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

spence.jpgDC is a town full of dogs, and we're not even talking about the politicians. We mean the four-legged furry kind whose lewd conduct is limited to humping your neighbor's leg. A surprising number of pets pop out of DC apartments around 5 p.m., keeping their owners company after the workday drudgery is over. How to thank man's best friend? Pet stores, pet bakeries, and even pet spa treatments abound in the District, offering perfect rewards for that dog, cat, or parakeet that cutes up your day.

Washington Animal Rescue League

71 Oglethorpe St NW
Washington, DC 20011

The Washington Animal Rescue League may be the cat's pajamas of shelters, but that doesn't mean the dogs and cats lucky enough to reside at this no-kill private facility in Takoma Park wouldn't be happier at home with you. Well trained staff help you evaluate which animal suits your needs as waterfalls and soothing music keep cats and dogs calm. (photo) [link]

Specialty pet shops are all well and good, but you're on a budget, and, really, does Fifi care if her collar cost $6 or $250? Check out Petco in Cleveland Park for a reasonably-priced large collection of pet supplies for dogs, cats, fish and other small animals. (photo) [link]

Doggie Style Bakery, Boutique, & Pet Spa

1825 18th St NW
Washington, DC 20009

Fido, let's go to Yappy Hour. You've probably never uttered that before in your life, but thanks to the Doggie Style Bakery, you can, if you must. The Dupont shop is a sponsor of the 5-8 p.m. "yappy hour" at nearby Adams Mill Bar and Grill every Friday, where singles can take their pups, have a few drinks, and maybe even land a date with a fellow dog lover. Aside from homemade goodies, Doggie Style offers all natural spa services for ritzy Dupont canines. Hate clipping your pet's nails? Bring him to Doggie Style, and employees will take care of it for only $12. (photo) [link]

Can your politico pooch be bribed? Find out with the store's homemade dog treats. Hill staffers' pets never had it better. The friendly owners of this shop also will pet-sit your favorite kitty while you're out of town. [link]
